Ancient History

Farming has been around longer than recorded history itself (not counting pictographs). In fact, it began about 10,000 years ago, as nomadic tribes transitioned to a stationary, agricultural society. This is also about the time that crops known as "founder crops" appeared. Founder crops are domesticated plant species, and include emmer wheat, hulled barley, einkorn wheat, peas, lentils, flax, chickpeas, and bitter vetch. This time period is known as the First Agricultural Revolution.

Two Revolutions for the Price of One

If the beginning of farming was the First Agricultural Revolution, what was the second? That wouldn't come until the 1700s, right alongside and because of the Industrial Revolution. The Second Agricultural Revolution ended some time in the 1900s for developed countries, however less developed countries around the world are still considered to be in it. It is marked by an increase in productivity due to technological innovations from the Industrial Revolution.

Late to the Game

While farming itself is about 10,000 years old, fruit farming began much later. Some time between 6000 and 3000 BC, figs became the first fruits ever to be farmed.

Simple but Elegant

Considered by some to be one of the most important inventions for the well being of society, the plow was invented right around the time farming was. The earliest known plow, known as an ard, was likely made from tree sticks sharpened and tied together. It was invented in the Middle East.

The Mother of Invention

They say necessity is the mother of invention. There are few things people need as much as food, so it is no wonder agricultural necessity spawned amazing feats even in historical times. The invention of the irrigation system can be attributed to this, as the Mesopotamians had simple ones built over 9,000 years ago.
