How Much Processing Makes a Food “Processed”?
Did you know that foods can be classified by how much they’ve been processed? It’s good news in a time when so many people are trying withdraw from heavily-processed foods and the damage they can do. At Keller Crafted Meats, we work hard every day to provide non-GMO meat that are not only raised right, but also retain their nutritional value and phenomenal taste. It’s harder than taking the shortcuts so much the food industry has created, but we know it is worth it.
In our last blog, we talked about Group 1 food classification. Our meat products fall into this category, which contained completely unprocessed to minimally-processed foods. Today, we want to talk about Group 2 foods.
Group 2: Culinary Ingredients
- Group 2 foods come from Group 1 foods. Basically, they are ingredients extracted from unprocessed foods. They aren’t used by themselves and don’t provide nutrients. They are created with processes like crushing, extrusion, milling, and more. They include things like fats, oils, flours, pastas, sugar, and sweeteners.
- It’s important to note that Group 2 foods also include preservatives, high fructose corn syrup, gums, and milk and soy proteins.
We here at Keller Crafted Meats believe it is possible to nourish humans and nature so both win. It takes dedication and expertise, but it works.
